In Pointe-Noire, Congo Terminal has just begun installing 65 fenders at the East Mole. The installation is taking place in two phases along a total quay length of 750 metres. The first phase will see 35 fenders installed by the end of the year, covering the first 400 metres. The second phase, due to begin in early 2027, will see the remaining 30 fenders fitted along the next 350 metres, thereby completing the work.

Although not very visible, the fenders play a vital role as they act as giant shock absorbers, protecting ships from impact whilst docking. Made from a block of high-strength rubber, protected by a steel panel with a slippery surface and anchored to the quay by metal fixings and chains, they are able to return to their original shape in the event of an impact. This protects both the ship’s hull and the quay structure. Their installation therefore ensures safe operations at every port of call.

A berthing manoeuvre takes just a few seconds, but its safety is planned months in advance. These fenders are the first line of defence for every vessel coming to berth. At the East Mole, operational safety is not just one objective amongst many: it is our standard.

This launch marks a concrete step forward for the East Mole project, which aims to strengthen Congo Terminal’s handling and operational capacity and to support the development of port activities in Pointe-Noire and the sub-region.
